State Library Of South Australia

The Pictorial Collections held by the State Library of South Australia cover most aspects of South Australian life during the past 175 years. From the early days of the colony when new migrants brought treasured memories from home in the form of daguerreotypes, through the development of photography as a popular hobby, to the 21st Century and the profusion of pictorial images in both traditional and digital forms.

It is estimated that the combined collections currently comprise more than 350,000 images, mostly although not all photographic. Of these more than 125,000 have been digitised and are viewable on-line. An active program of digitisation is continuing to make increasing numbers of images available.

The Pictorial Collection has developed to these proportions by the good will and generosity of our donors. The search for new material is ongoing and the State Library is interested in hearing from any seeking to donate photographs and archival records to the collections.
