Hinchinbrook Shire Libraries

Hinchinbrook Shire Libraries are a contributor to Picture Queensland

The Hinchinbrook Shire is located in North Queensland between Townsville and Cairns. The Library serves a shire population of 12,500 with 7,600 library members.

Hinchinbrook Shire Libraries value the role of maintaining local history resources for the community.

The local history collection includes:

• paper and microfilm copies of the Herbert River Express 1907 – present
• vertical files
• histories of local schools, churches and other organisations
• works about the Hinchinbrook/North Queensland district
• microforms of births, deaths and marriages
• Post Office records and regional gazetteers and
• ephemera and photographs

The local history role was expanded in 1999 when the Library established the Kennedy Regiment Library after the historical collection of the 31st Battalion Association was bequeathed to the Library by Mr Bob Burla. Now the Hinchinbrook Shire Libraries provide public access to numerous items belonging to the Kennedy Regiment Library including hundreds of photographs, some of which are online.
