Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales

The Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales Pictures Catalogue has a collection of paintings and drawings of several of the properties in its portfolio. There are pictures of Elizabeth Bay House, Vaucluse House and Government House by the well-known colonial artist Conrad Martens (1801-1878) and others by his contemporary George Edwards Peacock (1806-1890). There are twentieth century views of the Vaucluse estate by artists such as Douglas Dundas (1900-1981), Lionel Lindsay (1874-1961), J.S. Watkins (1866-1942) and Eirene Mort (1879-1977). The HHT collects such paintings for history’s sake, for their potential to enrich the interpretation of our properties.

In 2004 the children of the late Mrs Caroline Simpson OAM (1930–2003) gifted their mother’s outstanding collection of Australian colonial furniture, pictures and decorative arts, to the HHT and provided an endowment for the HHT’s research library. The library also has a small collection of photographs and other pictorial material acquired for their ability to communicate something of the history of house and garden design and interior furnishing in New South Wales.

The HHT also has a number of formed collections of historic photographs, associated with a particular property. We have, for example, an important collection of ‘Grand Tour’ photographs relating to the Rouse Hill estate purchased by members of the Rouse family during their overseas travels in the 1860s and 1870s. At the Justice & Police Museum we have around 350 nineteenth and early twentieth century photographs of New South Wales Police stations and courthouses and an archive of crime photography created by the New South Wales Police between 1910 and 1960.
