Gympie Regional Libraries

Gympie Regional Libraries are a contributor to Picture Queensland.

Gympie has a rich heritage particularly in gold mining and the timber and farming industries. Gympie Regional Libraries are committed to preserving the print and photographic material that documents our past.

The Local History Collection is a major part of Gympie Regional Libraries' service to clients. It is housed in its own room at the Gympie Library. In addition to images, the collection includes a full range of local history resources including:

• the Gympie Times on microfilm from 1868
• local district and school histories
• genealogical research materials
• gold mining historical information
• material on local indigenous history
• copies of over 6000 historical photographs

Gympie Regional Libraries' image collection was established in the 1980s. It contains copies of over 6000 historical photographs dating back to the late 1800s. Picture Gympie's images are representative of life within the Region, celebrating Gympie's gold mining past, capturing the historic floods and interesting people, buildings and changing scenery. Many of these images have been donated to the library by local residents, assisting us to preserve and record the shire's history.

Gympie Region Then and Now [http://www.gympie.qld.gov.au/library/thenandnow/] has been created to provide everyone with a visual link between our past and present. This interactive photographic website helps make our images more accessible to our clients.
